Pearl Millet Hybrid
Pearl millet is a tall, upright summer annual bunch grass with broad, flat, pointed leaves featuring serrated edges and distinctive cattail-like seed heads. Under optimal conditions it can reach heights of 6–8 feet, though it is best grazed when plants are between 24–30 inches tall for maximum palatability and regrowth potential.
One of its standout qualities is its ability to thrive where other summer annuals struggle. Pearl millet uses water efficiently and performs exceptionally well in heat and drought conditions, with a deep fibrous root system that draws moisture from lower in the soil profile. It also tolerates poor, sandy, or low-fertility soils better than most warm season grasses, making it a dependable option across a wide range of field conditions.
Pearl millet delivers relatively high crude protein compared to other warm season grasses, and its strong regrowth after grazing allows for multiple grazing passes within a single season. It relies on wind for self-pollination and remains productive from early summer through the first frost with proper management.
For livestock producers, pearl millet offers an important safety advantage — unlike sorghum and sorghum-sudan hybrids, it does not produce prussic acid, and it carries a low bloat risk as well. Seeds are also attractive to doves and other wildlife, adding food plot value for those managing land for multiple uses.
