Description

Japanese millet is an upright summer annual grass with thick stems and a coarser appearance than other millet varieties. Its extremely rapid growth rate makes it a reliable option for short growing windows or emergency forage situations where establishment speed is critical.

Reaching heights of 3–5 feet, Japanese millet performs particularly well in wet or poorly drained soils where other millets may struggle, making it a versatile fit across a range of field conditions. It is palatable to livestock when grazed or harvested young, though forage quality declines quickly as plants approach maturity.

It is also a top choice for waterfowl food plots, attracting ducks in particular, making it equally valuable for wildlife and habitat management applications.

Note: When incorporating mature plants, allow adequate time before planting a follow-up crop, as heavy stems and biomass can interfere with tillage and seedbed preparation.
